Travel by Bus

Buses provide an essential lifeline service to Shetland’s many rural communities. For many this area of public transport provides the necessary access to work, healthcare and leisure activities. In addition to this the bus network provides tourists with greater opportunities to explore the many attractions throughout Shetland’s countryside.

The bus service is provided by ZetTrans and operated by a number of different local bus service operators. It is acknowledged that buses must be effective in providing for a number of different needs beyond those of daily commuters. With this in mind ZetTrans is committed to ensuring there is a regular and affordable service that also aims to be better integrated with other transport services such as ferries and air services.

 

Service Disruptions

In the event of service disruption, updates can be obtained by calling the Bus Service Voicebank on 01595 745744. Updates will also be provided at www.shetnews.co.uk.

 

Public Holidays

In general bus and air services do not operate on public holidays. Please check with the operator of the service for any further details.

Christmas 2016 and New Year 2017 Services

On 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 28th, 29th, 30th and 31st December:

Service 24 (North Isles Integrated Service)

- Departure from Tesco at 1400

- Departure from Viking Bus Station at 1410

 

On Saturday 24th December and Saturday 31st December, the following services will have alterations:

Service 4 (Lerwick to Scalloway)

- Last departure from Lerwick at 1715

- Last departure from Scalloway at 1743

- 1910, 2120 and 2300 departures from Lerwick cancelled

- 1938 and 2233 departures from Scalloway cancelled

Service 6 (Lerwick to Sumburgh)

- Last departure from Lerwick at 1715

- Last departure from Sumburgh at 1700

- 2300 departure from Lerwick cancelled

- 2003 departure from Sumburgh cancelled

Service 9 (Lerwick to Walls)

- Last departure from Lerwick at 1715

- Last departure from Walls at 1810

- 2300 departure from Lerwick cancelled

Service 23 (Lerwick to Toft/Mossbank)

- Last departure from Lerwick at 1715

- Last departure from Toft at 1803

- 2255 departure from Lerwick cancelled

 

There will be no public bus services on Sunday 25th December, Monday 26th December, Sunday 1st January or Monday 2nd January.

On Tuesday 27th December and Tuesday 3rd January, only Service 6 (Lerwick to Sumburgh) will operate. This operation will be to the Sunday timetable. Lerwick departures will be at 0915, 1215, 1415, 1615 and 1845. Sumburgh departures will be at 1155, 1355, 1555, 1755 and 2000.

 

North Mainland

Service 20 - Nesting Shopper - will operate on Wednesday 28th December and Wednesday 4th January in place of services timetabled for Tuesday 27th December and Tuesday 3rd January.

Service 39 - Hillswick Shopper - will operate on Tuesday 20th December in place of the service timetabled for Tuesday 27th December.

 

Bressay

Service 41 - Bressay Shopper - will operate on Wednesday 28th December and Wednesday 4th January in place of services timetabled for Tuesday 27th December and Tuesday 3rd January.

 

South Mainland

Service 60 - Cunningsburgh Shopper and Cunningsburgh/Sandwick to Levenwick Health Centre - will operate on Wdnesday 28th December and Wednesday 4th January in place of services timetabled for Tuesday 27th December and Tuesday 3rd January.

Service 61 - Sumburgh Area to Health Centre and Shop - will operate on Wednesday 28th December, Thursday 29th December, Wednesday 4th January and Thursday 5th January in place of services timetabled for Monday 26th December, Tuesday 27th December, Monday 2nd January and Tuesday 3rd January.

Service 67 - Cunningsburgh and Sandwick Shopper - will operate on Wednesday 28th December and Wednesday 4th January in place of services timetabled for Monday 26th December and Monday 2nd January.

 

North Isles

Service 72 - West Yell Service - will operate on Wednesday 28th December and Wednesday 4th January in place of services timetabled for Tuesday 27th December and Tuesday 3rd January.

Service 81 - North Unst Shopper - will operate on Wednesday 28th December and Wednesday 4th January in place of services timetabled for Monday 26th December and Monday 2nd January.

 

West Mainland

Service 10 - Sandness/Dale of Walls to Walls - will operate on Thursday 29th December and Thursday 5th January in place of services timetabled for Tuesday 27th December and Tuesday 3rd January.

Service 13 - Skeld Shopper - will operate on Wednesday 28th December and Wednesday 4th January in place of services timetabled for Tuesdau 27th December and Tuesday 3rd January.

Service 14 - Whiteness and Weisdale Shopper - will operate on Thursday 29th December in place of the service timetabled for Tuesday 27th December.

Service 91 - Gruting to Bixter Shopper - will operate on Wednesday 28th December and Wednesday 4th January in place of services timetabled for Monday 26th December and Monday 2nd January.

Service 94 - Bridge of Walls to Walls Shopper - will operate on Thursday 29th December and Thursday 5th January in place of services timetabled for Tuesday 27th December and Tuesday 3rd January.

 

Please note that bookable services must be booked by telephoning 01595 745745 by 1600 on the day preceeding travel.

Bookings for services operating between Wednesday 28th December and Wednesday 4th January must be made by 1600 on Friday 23rd December, as the Transport Office will be closed from 1700 on Friday 23rd December through until 0900 on Wednesday 4th January.

 

Carriage of Animals

ZetTrans does not have a policy covering the carriage of animals on public transport vehicles. The decision whether or not to permit animals on board vehicles is at the discretion of the individual service Operators.

 

Bicyles on Buses

ZetTrans does not have a policy covering the carriage bicyles on public transport vehicles. Due to varying vehicles capacities on each route, please contact the route operator to check before travel.
